On Park Avenue South, inside the layered arches and ornate columns of a historically landmarked church mission house, Stockholm based gallery Fotografiska has opened its newest space. Founders Jan and Per Broman gathered a thoughtful team of designers, architects, and technicians to keep much of the structure intact to celebrate the structure while being at the forefront of design. The stepped roofs alongside luscious lighting, the first collection of photographs from artists such as, and the scale 45,000 sq feet, are some of what makes the experience of walking through the space so striking.

A feature that is almost invisible, the adept quality of the technological details, is what truly elevates the experience. Steve Lastro of 6Sides, who was in charge of AV, IT, and security, has skillfully created an integrated and seamless system of cameras, speakers, screens, and projectors. The refined audio soundscape and visual journey starts the moment you enter the building and spans six floors including the retail cafe, restaurant, three exhibition floors and the adjoining event space and chapel.

The first sign that this historic building is a completely transformed is a projection map that spans 3-floors (70 ft. wide x 39 ft. high). Each window is equipped with a projector which turns the inner walls of the space into a canvas that can be seen from the street. Lastro paired with projectionist Bill Gillette to ensure synchronized and striking visuals curated by a changing docket of artists. It is the first projection installation of this scale to be installed in a gallery in New York. As soon as you walk into the building the soundscape shifts and you are transported from the chaos of the streets into a lively yet calm space.
"When we were approached by Fotografiska to develop the technology concept for their New York space, says Steve Lastro, we wanted to bridge the gap between design and immersive experiences by merging them through innovative technology. Our aim was to create one-of-a-kind experiences to all visitors walking through the five floors to Fotografiska but also to the passer-by looking at the building from outside"
Fotografiska opened in December 2019.
